A teenager who accidentally blinded his best friend during a fight in which he slashed another man 11 times with a broken bottle has avoided jail.He got a suspended sentence, and treatment for ‘anger management issues’.
Oh, well. I suppose one out of two is the best we can hope for…

I often wonder if our system is random. The idea is to have us all worried the suppressing fire will hit us if we pop our heads up. There's some pretty convincing US research that juries are wrong about one time in ten (both ways). Given the added lunacy training of magistrates and judges I'm not surprised they manage worse than twelve people good and true would on sentencing.
Most of us, unlikely to commit offences other than when under distress or trying to protest injustice, actually face the prospect that our defence (for we will not get legal aid) will cost several times more than any punishment.

It makes more sense than anything else, doesn't it?
